1.4 What should I bring?

← Back to Chapter 1: So, You Wanna Be A LARPer?

Whether you're a hardened adventurer or just setting out on your very first quest, preparing properly can make all the difference. Here’s a guide to what you’ll need—both In-Play (IP) and Out-of-Play (OOP)—to ensure you have a smooth, immersive, and enjoyable experience at your first Volaire event.

Costuming

Your costume should match the medieval high-fantasy setting of Volaire, and reflect your character’s race, class, and personality. It doesn’t need to be expensive—thrift stores, flea markets, and DIY crafting are excellent resources. Need inspiration or help? Veteran players and staff are always happy to lend advice and ideas.

Tip: Layered earth tones, belts, boots, and accessories go a long way—even with simple materials.

Boffer Weapons

Weapons can be purchased on site or made yourself (see the official guidelines in this book and on our website). All weapons must pass a safety inspection by staff before use. If you don’t have one, you may borrow a weapon, but you'll need to leave your event tag with the Monstering staff until the weapon is returned.

Failure to return borrowed gear will result in lost XP for that event and may lead to replacement costs or disciplinary action.

Spell Packets

If your character uses magic, you’ll need spell packets—small, soft throwable packets that physically represent your spells. Instructions for making them are available in this rulebook and online. While staff may have some on hand, they’re limited and primarily for official use, so please bring your own.

Most players carry 20–30 spell packets in a pouch or belt quiver.

Makeup

If your character belongs to a race that requires makeup (such as Drow, Faeries, or Half-Fiends), you’ll need to consult a Race Marshal for approval of your makeup and costume before you play.

We recommend aqua cake makeup for durability and ease of use. Basic prosthetics like elf ears or horns may be available on-site in limited quantities—but please do not rely on this. Bring your own supplies!

You have up to 4 events to finalize your race-appropriate look. See the “New Character Leniency Policy” for details.

Orange and White Headbands

White Headband = You are Out-of-Play (OOP). Orange Headband = You are medically removed from combat.

Always carry both! If you become injured or need to step out of combat for any reason, wearing the appropriate headband ensures everyone understands your status. For nighttime, an orange light must be visible from the front and back.

Miscellaneous IP Items

  • Belt pouches and satchels
  • Spellbooks or scroll props
  • In-game coin boxes or purses
  • Personal notebooks for rituals or lore
  • Cabin decorations that match your character’s aesthetic

Immersive accessories enhance not only your own experience, but the entire game world.

Out-of-Play Essentials

These items keep you, the player, safe and comfortable throughout the weekend.

  • Toilet paper
  • Bottled water (lots of it!)
  • Non-perishable snacks (granola bars, trail mix, jerky, etc.)
  • Hygiene products (deodorant, toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, soap, etc.)
  • Bath towel
  • Sleepwear and bedding (or sleeping bag)
  • Extra socks and undergarments
  • A change of clothes for the drive home
  • Flashlight or lantern (headlamp recommended)
  • White headband (for OOP status)

Yes, personal hygiene is absolutely part of a good LARP experience!

Final Note: When in Doubt, Leave It Out

If you're ever unsure whether something is appropriate to bring, especially for In-Play use, follow this golden rule:

If you have to ask, it’s probably best to leave it at home.
