What Is a Prestige Class?
A Prestige Class is a rare and prestigious path that represents the apex of a character’s development within the world of Volaire. Unlike starting classes, Prestige Classes cannot be selected during character creation. Instead, they are earned—through meaningful roleplay, world-shaping choices, and a proven legacy forged over time.
These classes are not just mechanical upgrades; they reflect transformation. Whether through grueling training, hidden knowledge, faction allegiance, or sheer reputation, Prestige Classes mark a character as extraordinary.
How Do I Attain a Prestige Class?
Prestige Classes are unlocked through a combination of mechanical milestones and in-character achievement. They are meant to reward players who engage deeply with the story, the world, and their fellow players.
Step 1: Base Requirements
Before a character can pursue a Prestige Class, the following conditions must be met:
- Must be Level 30 or higher.
- Must have shown significant investment in their base class’s abilities and narrative.
- Must have completed a major personal story arc or contributed significantly to a campaign.
- Must submit an updated character development summary that reflects how the character has grown, changed, and what they now seek.
Step 2: In-Game Discovery
Prestige Classes are not simply “selected”—they must be discovered and pursued in-play. This may happen through:
- The uncovering of an ancient text, blueprint, or technique.
- An invitation from an elite group or hidden master.
- Mastering a skill or philosophy until it transcends the boundaries of the original class.
- Earning a title or reputation that draws the attention of secret orders or master trainers.
Game Managers will monitor progress, drop narrative hooks, and offer opportunities organically through roleplay and world interaction.
Step 3: The Prestige Trial
Once your character’s path to a Prestige Class is recognized, a Prestige Trial will be issued—a unique challenge designed to test and affirm your character’s evolution.
Trials may include:
- A deadly mission, infiltration, or siege.
- Crafting or recovering a legendary artifact.
- Leading others through conflict, diplomacy, or hardship.
- Making a permanent choice that alters your character’s role or identity.
Trials are tailored per player, designed to challenge what makes your character them.
Step 4: Ascension and Recognition
Upon successful completion of the trial:
- Your character formally takes on the Prestige Class.
- You receive unique mechanical benefits, new RP privileges, and potentially exclusive skills or gear.
- You are granted a custom tag or identifier symbolizing your new role.
- Your Prestige Class status becomes known (or secret, at your discretion) and may carry social or political weight in-game.
Important Notes
- Prestige Classes are optional—no player is obligated to pursue one.
- A character may only ever possess one Prestige Class.
- Prestige Classes are permanent unless revoked by story or broken oath.
- Players who attain Prestige Classes are expected to maintain high levels of roleplay and engagement.
- Prestige Classes may have visual, behavioral, or costuming expectations tied to their nature.
A full list of available Prestige Classes will be provided in a separate document. These classes are to be considered part of the game’s advanced content and are unlocked through meaningful play, not just leveling.
