As you explore the world of Volaire, you’ll encounter many beings—some detailed and costumed, others more abstract or minimally represented. In a world where not every monster can be fully portrayed with prosthetics and fur suits, asking for clarity is essential to immersion and fair play.
When you're unsure of what you're looking at—whether it's a lone figure on a trail, a shape in the distance, or something partially represented—you may call out:
This is an In-Play question. It is treated as something your character is saying aloud.
If you’re asking this as a player, you are actively engaging in roleplay.
The target may respond in-character, such as:
“Carla, ranger of Silverfall—who asks?”
If the figure is an NPC or monster, they may also respond in-character, and/or give a physical description (see below).
This is an Out-of-Play request. It means:
"Please tell me what your character or creature is meant to look like."
This question is used when someone is wearing a tabard, light makeup, or simplified costuming and their appearance may not be clear from visuals alone.
If you hear “What do I see?”, you should respond with a brief, clear description of your character or creature’s appearance.
Examples:
“An 8-foot-tall, dog-like humanoid with black fur standing upright.”
“A female-presenting Drow in a black and red tabard, holding a curved dagger.”
“A 4-foot-tall ice goblin with frost around its shoulders and pale blue skin.”
If you're portraying a creature or NPC and hear:
Descriptions don’t need to be flowery—just clear enough to help the other player visualize and react appropriately.
The world of Volaire is rich, diverse, and imaginative—but it’s also filled with logistical limitations. "Who Goes?!" and "What Do I See?" are tools that allow players to bridge the gap between imagination and representation, keeping the experience immersive and fair.
Use them freely, respond helpfully, and help everyone see the world a little more clearly.
